Course Information

DOT Pipeline: Abnormal Conditions & Safety is a General Safety Orientation course to support the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) Operator Qualification Rules regarding pipelines and pipeline facilities. Please refer to Course Content below.

Recommended For

All construction and contracted maintenance and services personnel involved in working in or around pipelines and pipeline facilities.

 

Course Content

Course content includes factors to consider when responding to emergencies for both natural gas and liquid pipelines Operators.

After completing this module, the learner:

  • Will become familiar with the Department of Transportation definition of Abnormal Operating Conditions.
  • Will be able to recognize Abnormal Operating Conditions on a pipeline facility.
  • Will be able to take safe corrective action(s) regarding Abnormal Operating Conditions to ensure the safety of people first, property and the environment.
  • Will be able to explain the difference between Abnormal Operating Conditions as defined in the Operator Qualification Rule 192.803 and 195.503 and Abnormal Operations as defined in 192.605(c) and 195.402(2).
  • Will be able to describe potential Safety Related Conditions.
  • Will have knowledge of the special consideration that should be given to the development of written procedures for the timely analysis of, and follow through on, information obtained through the use of an instrumented (smart) pig.
  • Will be able to list typical Abnormal Operating Conditions on a pipeline facility.
  • Will be able to rate the level of hazard associated with identified Abnormal Operating Conditions.
